4th Annual Veterans Forum
I am hosting my 4th annual Veterans Forum tomorrow!

The forum will bring together experts from veterans services organizations, officials from the Department of Veterans Affairs, and veterans from across the First District to discuss important issues impacting veterans and to offer assistance with getting access to help they need.

All veterans are welcome. I hope to see you Monday!

$1.2 billion in Benefits
Georgians received more great tax reform news this week! Georgia Power announced customers will receive $1.2 billion in benefits as a result of the Tax Cuts and Jobs Act.

Thanks to tax reform, Georgians will see lower energy bills.

Click here to read Georgia Power's announcement.

The benefits of tax reform can be seen many ways. Hardworking Americans are receiving wage increases, bonuses, increased parental leave, community investments, lower energy costs and more. I can't wait to see what is next.

From our Nation's Capitol CLIII
Monday, March 5, 2018:  What a great weekend!  On Saturday I stopped by the West Point Society of Savannah Founders Day event to say hello before heading to the 117th Air Control Squadron of the Georgia Air National Guard headquartered at HAAF Military Dining Out event in Richmond Hill.  It was my honor to be the keynote speaker at this event for this great group of Americans who will be deployed in a few months to an undisclosed location in Southwest Asia.

Rep. Carter speaking at the 117th Air Control Squadron of the Georgia Air National Guard headquartered at HAAF Military Dining Out event in Richmond Hill
The 117th Air Control Squadron, an integral part of the Georgia Air National Guard, has a storied and diverse history.  From the Arctic Circle to the Caribbean, they have always heeded the call to help control our air traffic in areas of great need.  On Sunday, I stopped by the Investiture of 2018 St. Patrick’s Day Parade Grand Marshall Michael Kenny, before heading to the Congressional High School Art Exhibition at the Armstrong Campus of Georgia Southern University.  Each spring, our office sponsors a districtwide high school visual art competition to recognize and encourage artistic talent in the district.  The winning work is displayed for one year at the U.S. Capitol.  This morning, I’m at Sol. C. Johnson High School in Thunderbolt to welcome a group of German exchange students who arrived last week for a student exchange program.  Afterwards, I head to Jesup and Wayne County where I meet with superintendents and other school officials from the First District for a school safety roundtable.  After the tragedy in Parkland, FL, I want to hear from these “boots on the ground” to receive their input on how we can improve school safety, give them information pertaining to available resources and notify them of current federal policy under consideration.

The input I receive from these public and private school officials is invaluable.  Afterwards, I meet with the media to report on this very productive meeting before heading back to Savannah for my return trip to Washington.  Once back at the Capitol, I meet with Chatham County Commissioner Helen Stone to discuss mental health issues in our jail system before heading to our weekly Messaging Advisory Group meeting followed by our weekly Whip Team meeting.  After our first and only vote series of the day, I stay in the House Chamber where I speak on tax reform and later speak during the special order on nuclear waste being hosted by Energy and Commerce (E&C) Environment Subcommittee Chairman John Shimkus (R-IL).  A link to these speeches can be found here and here.

Tuesday, March 6, 2018:  I have a radio interview early this morning with Bill Edwards and Laura Anderson in Savannah to discuss the school safety roundtable I hosted yesterday in Jesup after which I head to a Doctor’s Caucus meeting where we meet with House Physician Dr. Brian Monahan to review the train wreck involving Republican Members of Congress traveling to West Virginia last month.  We reviewed our response to the tragic incident, discussed our preparedness and procedures, including what we did right and what can be improved upon, as well as equipment that was available and what we might need for future travels.  Next, I head to our weekly GOP conference before heading to my office for a meeting with representatives from the Civil War Trust including legendary University of Georgia (UGA) football coach Vince Dooley.

Coach Dooley is a strong advocate for maintaining our important historical sites such as our American battlefields for future generations. Afterwards, I meet with staff for our weekly staff briefing before meeting with a group of various pharmacy organizations to introduce them to our new health care legislative aide, Olivia Dickey.  After a meeting with representatives from the American Israel Public Affairs Committee (AIPAC) to discuss American-Israel relationships, I meet with the Rural Community Assistance Partnership.  Later, I meet with Robert F. Kennedy, Jr. and representatives from the World Mercury Project to discuss vaccine safety, followed by meetings with the UGA Sea Grant program and the House Baltic Caucus.  Next, I head to the House Chamber for our first and only vote series of the day before heading back to my office for a meeting with the Georgia School Nutrition Association and then with the Georgia Veterans of Foreign Wars.  Before calling it a day, I record a number of responses to our Twitter questions. Remember, you can ask me your questions on Twitter with the hashtag #AskBuddy.

Wednesday, March 7, 2018:  My first meeting this morning is with the greatest college football player of all time, legendary UGA running back Herschel Walker, who is in town with the Sports & Fitness Industry.

Rep. Carter meeting with Herschel Walker
While he’s in the office, I film a Twitter response with Herschel to a question I received asking who I thought was the greatest Georgia player of all time.  A link to that response can be found here.  Afterwards, I head to an E&C Environment Subcommittee hearing titled “The Future of Transportation Fuels and Vehicles.” A link to my questions can be found here.  After returning to my office, I film more responses to Twitter questions and then head to the House Chamber for our first vote series of the day and then return to my office for a meeting with the Assistant Secretary of the Substance Abuse and Mental Health Services Administration (SAMHSA), Dr. McCance-Katz.  Next, I meet with representatives from the Atlantic Intracoastal Waterway Association followed by a meeting with the United Brotherhood of Carpenters and then Alliant Health Solutions.  After heading to the House Chamber for our second and final vote series of the day, I head downtown where I speak to a group of Rite Aid Pharmacists and leadership at their annual meeting in Washington.

Thursday, March 8, 2018:  I begin this morning with a meeting of the E&C Health Subcommittee where we hear from CMS Administrator Seema Verma regarding administration initiatives and shared priorities.  After meeting with representatives from the Georgia Alliance for YMCA’s and then the National Association of Chain Drug Stores, I head to an E&C Oversight and Investigation Subcommittee hearing on this year’s flu vaccine.  Next, I head downtown to meet with members of the National Association of Chain Drug Stores before heading to the airport for my return flight home.

Friday, March 9, 2018:  I’m at the WTOC TV studios in Savannah this morning to do an interview about our Veterans Forum coming up on Monday.  Next, I head to downtown Savannah where I am honored to participate in the Greening of the Fountain ceremony at Forsyth Park by joining Savannah Mayor Eddie Deloach in leading the Pledge of Allegiance.  After a meeting with my good friend, Dave Barron with the International Conservation Caucus Foundation (ICCF), I head to Brunswick for a meeting at my district office with Doris Carter and new Glynn County Police Chief John Powell to discuss homelessness, senior care and other issues in the Glynn County area.  I also have a phone interview with National Journal to discuss prescription drug pricing before heading to Sea Island where I meet with Rt. Hon. Michael Gove MP, the Secretary of State for Environment, Food and Rural Affairs with the United Kingdom to discuss agriculture issues in our respective countries.
