Monday, September 9, 2019: I’m in our Savannah office this morning and my first meeting is with the McDonald’s franchisees owners in the Savannah area as we discuss an inadvertent omission from the 2017 Tax Cuts and Jobs Act (TCJA) that will adversely impact them and the steps we need to take to correct it.

While the TCJA helped restaurants like McDonald’s tremendously, the omission of Qualified Improvement Property (QIP) should be corrected soon. My next meeting is with members of the Georgia chapter of the Lupus Foundation of America to discuss issues of importance to the lupus community, including funding for critical research and education programs. Next, I meet with a constituent concerned with the Presidential determination for refugee arrivals in FY20 and asking me to consider co-sponsoring the Grace Act, which would ensure that refugee arrivals are never set below 95,000.

Once back in DC, we have our weekly staff briefing before I head to our weekly Whip Team meeting. Next, I head to the House Chamber for our first vote series of the week and afterwards pay tribute on the floor to my good friend Laura Anderson, whose last day after 21 years on the radio in the Savannah area was last Friday. Wednesday, September 11, 2019: Do you remember where you were eighteen years ago on September 11, 2001 when you first heard the news of a plane crashing into the World Trade Center in New York City? I do and I’ll never forget that day as it is forever etched in my memory. This morning at 8:46 a.m., I gather on the steps of the Capitol with other members of Congress as we observe a moment of silence in remembrance of that day followed by the singing of “God Bless America.”
