Carter Announces $11.3 Million for Project DeRenne in Savannah

SAVANNAH, GA – Congressman Earl L. “Buddy” Carter (R-GA) today announced that the City of Savannah will receive $11,302,500 in federal funding to advance Project DeRenne, a major transportation project aimed at reducing congestion and improving connectivity in Savannah.

The funding, awarded through the U.S. Department of Transportation’s INFRA program, will support right-of-way acquisition necessary for a planned new four-lane divided connector from I-516 to a realigned White Bluff Road.

“Project DeRenne has been a priority for Savannah for years, and this $11.3 million investment is a major step toward moving it forward,” said Rep. Carter. “This project will help ease congestion, improve access to Hunter Army Airfield, and strengthen a critical transportation corridor for families, workers, and businesses across our region. I’m proud to help bring these federal dollars home to Georgia’s First Congressional District.”

“The City of Savannah remains committed to improving DeRenne Avenue, and we’re excited about the continued momentum with the support of United States Department of Transportation (USDOT), Georgia Department of Transportation (GDOT), Hunter Army Airfield, Savannah Technical College, Memorial Health University Medical Center (MHUMC), the Georgia Motor Trucking Association, and Congressman Carter,” said Mayor Van R. Johnson, II. “DeRenne Avenue carries regional significance, but it’s also the way that our residents rely on every day to get to work, school, and home. This project continues to be an incredible example of partnership, and we’re proud to keep it moving forward.”

Project DeRenne is a long-term transportation initiative designed to improve mobility along the DeRenne Avenue corridor. The planned connector is intended to reduce traffic pressure around DeRenne Avenue, White Bluff Road, and Abercorn Street while improving access to Hunter Army Airfield.

The INFRA program provides competitive federal grants for nationally and regionally significant freight and highway projects that improve the safety, efficiency, and reliability of the movement of people and freight.
