It has now been more than a year since the House passed the 21st Century Cures Act to modernize America's health care innovation infrastructure.
Today, health care innovation is happening faster than anyone thought it ever could. We are seeing incredible breakthroughs but they are being stifled by the federal government's antiquated drug and device approval process. We could see a complete change in disease treatment, management and cures but they are not able to make it from the lab to the patient. We must change this model which is why, for the first time ever, Congress has taken a comprehensive look at what we need to do to accelerate cures in our country. We worked with patients, doctors, researchers and innovators to create the 21st Century Cures Act.
Specifically, Cures removes barriers to increase research collaboration, incorporates the patient perspective into the drug development and regulatory review process, identifies diseases earlier through personalized medicine, modernizes clinical trials, removes regulatory uncertainty for the development of new medical apps, and provides new incentives for the development of drugs for rare diseases. This legislation will save lives but it's stuck in the Senate waiting for action.
As the Senate returns from the district work period next week, I strongly urge them to put the 21st Century Cures Act at the top of their list. Today there are only treatments for approximately 500 of the 10,000 known diseases and it's past time to get this legislation to the President's desk so it can be signed into law.
In case you missed it, earlier this summer I had the opportunity to discuss this legislation with the medical innovators in the First District of Georgia. Click here to read more about one of my visits. |
