The Commitment to America |
|
This week, House Republicans announced our Commitment to America.
Before the COVID-19 pandemic, America was thriving and we saw the greatest economy in a generation. America is worth fighting for, and our plan works to restore our way of life, rebuild the greatest economy in history and renew the American dream.

During the pandemic, many Georgians have been working day in and day out, risking their own health and safety to serve others. I spoke on the House floor this week to express my deep gratitude to our frontline workers, health care heroes and all others who have taken care of their neighbors in these unprecedented times.

Monday, September 14, 2020: On Saturday I had the privilege of speaking to the Georgia Federation of Republican Women (GFRW) at their annual conference on Jekyll Island. A grassroots political organization, GFRW empowers women from all backgrounds in the political process and encourages women to serve as leaders in the political, government and civic arenas.

After an early morning flight to Washington this morning, I join our daily all-staff conference call on my way to the Politics and Pros golf tournament to benefit the First Tee of Greater Washington, DC. This great program is a youth development organization introducing the game of golf and its values to young people. The program helps to shape the lives of young people from all walks of life by reinforcing values like integrity, respect and perseverance through the game of golf. Later, I have a Whip Team conference call to review the legislation being considered this week before heading to a GOP Conference meeting in the Capitol Visitors Center (CVC) where we discuss our schedule for the week. Next, I head to the House Chamber and, after our first vote series of the week, I remain in the Chamber where I take part in a special order with the Doctor’s Caucus as we speak on Operation Warp Speed and the progress being made with the development of a vaccine for COVID-19. Operation Warp Speed is a government public-private partnership that aims to develop, manufacture and distribute COVID-19 vaccines, therapeutics and diagnostics. After more than 30 years of practice as a Registered Pharmacist, I am very familiar with the Food and Drug Administration’s (FDA) process for the development and approval of drugs and vaccines and have been very impressed with the speed and progress that is being made in approving a vaccine for COVID-19. Without cutting corners and still maintaining rigorous tests to assure the safety and efficacy of a vaccine, manufacturers and the FDA have done a phenomenal job working together to deliver a vaccine in record time. A link to my comments can be found here.
Tuesday, September 15, 2020: I start my morning early with a meeting of the Border Security Caucus where we hear from U.S. Border Patrol (USBP) Chief Rodney Scott as he discusses the agency’s efforts to address COVID-19 in South Texas, including the deployment of Customs and Border Protection (CBP) officers to the region to support USBP operations. Next, I head to the Capitol Plaza where I join leadership and other members of the Republican Conference as we roll out our Commitment to America plan. Whereas, Democrats want to defund, dismantle and destroy, we in the Republican Party want to restore, rebuild and renew. A more detailed look into our plan to restore our way of life, rebuild the greatest economy in history and renew the American dream can be found in this week's Buddy’s Briefing.

Afterwards, I head back to my office where I have a virtual call with the Farm Journal Foundation, a non-profit organization dedicated to achieving global food security, before joining in on our all-staff conference call. Next, I head to the House Chamber where we have our first vote series of the day and afterwards head back to my office where I have a virtual call with members of the American Academy of Dermatology Association before joining in on a conservative Republican Study Committee (RSC) Values Action Team (VAT) meeting where we discuss pending legislation to legalize marijuana.

After heading back to the House Chamber for our second vote series of the day, I head to the National Gaming Association headquarters where I have an interview with A Starting Point website.
Wednesday, September 16, 2020: I’m in the House Chamber this morning as I deliver a tribute to the many health care and essential workers that have gone above and beyond in their service during the COVID-19 pandemic. I also pay tribute to Preston Exley from Effingham County afterwards. A link to my tributes can be found here and here. Next, I head to an Energy and Commerce (E&C) Environment Subcommittee meeting where we discuss building a 100% clean economy. A link to my questions can be found here.

After our daily all-staff conference call, I join a virtual conservative RSC meeting before heading back to the House Chamber for our first and only vote series of the day. Next, I have a meeting with a group of female health care workers including physicians, pharmacists and nurses from around the country to discuss health care issues and afterwards have a virtual call with Managed Health Care Associates where I participate in an answer and question session on health care issues. My final meeting of the day is another virtual call where I speak to the Business Leaders United on the Hill to discuss how skills training and industry partnerships are critical for our local economic recovery, and how federal policy can support those efforts.
Thursday, September 17, 2020: After an early morning meeting of the Georgia delegation, I head back to my office where I join in on our daily all-staff conference call. Next, I record a Georgia Chamber of Commerce health care discussion with Department of Public Health (DPH) Commissioner Dr. Kathleen Toomey to review Georgia’s COVID-19 response and Operation Warp Speed. Afterwards, I head to the House Chamber for our first and only vote series of the day before heading to the Fountain of Light and Water located at the foot of Capitol Hill where I film this week’s edition of Buddy’s Briefing. Once I’m finished, I head back to the House Chamber where I deliver a tribute to September being National Suicide Awareness month. A link to my tribute can be found here.
Friday, September 18, 2020: After flying home late yesterday afternoon, my first call this morning is with the Air Force Director of Staff and other members of his staff, including a member of the Air Force Historians office to discuss borrowing a B-24 “Liberator” bomber from the Air Force. The request is on behalf of the National Museum of the Mighty Eighth Air Force located in Pooler, one of the premier aviation museums in the nation. Founded in Savannah during War World II, the Mighty Eighth first became famous for their bombing missions over Germany during the war, using primarily B-24 and B-17 bombers. Currently, the museum has a B-17 on display. Next, I join in on our daily all-staff conference call followed by a call with Environmental Protection Administration (EPA) Regional Administrator Mary Walker and staff to discuss the SeaPoint Complex in Savannah being developed by Dulany Industries. After a very productive discussion concerning this exciting project, I join an Energy and Commerce (E&C) Committee bipartisan member briefing with Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) Director Robert Redfield, MD, for an update on CDC’s recent testing guidance and communication to the states regarding preparing to distribute a vaccine by November 1. |
