Memorial Day
This weekend we observe Memorial Day. All across our great nation, we remember and honor the brave service members who paid the ultimate sacrifice. Let us also honor the family members of our fallen service members.

We live in the greatest country in the world. Our service members sacrifice so much to defend the values and freedoms we hold so dearly. Many have given everything, including their life.

On this Memorial Day, please join me in honoring our fallen service members and their families.

God Bless America. God bless our service members.

Honor the fallen
HONOR THE FALLEN: This Memorial Day weekend, please join me in praying for the brave men and women who gave their lives for our nation.

From our Nation's Capitol CCXII
Monday, May 20, 2019:  On Saturday morning I attended the funeral of Savannah police officer Sgt. Kelvin Ansari who was killed in an officer involved shooting on May 11 after responding to a robbery in downtown Savannah.  The service was held at Calvary Baptist Temple followed by a motorcade procession to Bonaventure Cemetery where he was laid to rest.  Sgt. Ansari was born in Albany, GA, and, before his service on the police force, was honorably discharged from the Army after serving our country for 21 years.  Also attending the services were Georgia Governor Brian Kemp, Savannah Mayor Eddie Deloach and other dignitaries as well as hundreds of police officers, some from as far away as Dallas, Boston and New York City.  On this day our community mourned the loss of a husband, a father and a hero.  In times like these we are reminded of the danger police officers face every day in keeping our communities safe.  My thoughts and prayers continue to go out to his family.  Later in the day, at the request of Savannah Alderwoman Estella Shabazz, I, along with Savannah Mayor Eddie Deloach and Alderman Van Johnson visited Savannah Summit apartments where we met with residents and toured the property.  My office has been coordinating communication between Savannah officials, the Savannah Summit apartments property manager and Department of Housing and Urban Development (HUD) officials.  After speaking with residents and touring the property we received written complaints regarding the apartments and I made sure the complaints were received by HUD officials.

Rep. Carter at the Nine Line Run for the Wounded
Afterwards, I headed to Grayson Stadium in Savannah for the 6th annual Nine Line 5K/10K Run for the Wounded. Proceeds from this race went directly towards the newest Nine Line initiative - building of a transitional community, a veterans village for homeless veterans in Savannah. I had the opportunity to present a flag flown over the U.S. Capitol to five of the wounded warriors who the foundation honored this year.  After flying back to Washington this afternoon, I head straight to votes and stay in the House Chamber afterwards and recognize May as Mental Health Awareness Month.  A link to my comments can be found here.

Tuesday, May 21, 2019:  My first meeting this morning is with the Doctor’s Caucus as we have as our guest former Center for Medicaid and Medicare Services (CMS) Administrator Tom Scully.  Now working in the private sector, former Administrator Scully shares with us his experience as head of CMS when Medicare Part D was created in 2003.  Next, I head to our weekly GOP Conference meeting before heading back to my office where I meet with the International Academy of Compound Pharmacists.  Afterwards, I head to an Energy and Commerce (E&C) Health Subcommittee hearing on drug pricing transparency.  A link to my questions can be found here.  After filming a video regarding the 100th anniversary of House passage of the 19th Amendment granting women the right to vote, I head to a members only secure briefing regarding Iran where we hear from numerous White House officials including Secretary of State Mike Pompeo.

Rep. Carter meeting with NORPAC
Next, I head back to my office where we have our weekly staff briefing and afterwards I meet with NORPAC, a group that promotes U.S.-Israel relations.  After heading down to the House Chamber for our first and only vote series of the day, I head back to my office where I meet with a group of representatives from different pharmacy associations to discuss recent CMS actions.  Next, I meet with representatives from the National Fisheries Institute followed by the National Air Traffic Controllers Association.  After meeting with the American Pharmacy Cooperative and then the Georgia Society of Certified Public Accountants, I have a telephone town hall with my special guest Rep. Phil Roe (R-TN).

Wednesday, May 22, 2019:  I’m downtown this morning to participate in a natural gas roundtable discussion sponsored by the Conservation Partnership Institute.  The discussion focuses on the role of natural gas in promoting the Administration’s goals of economic growth, job creation, and trade-deficit reduction.  Once back at the Capitol, I head to an E&C full committee hearing on a Democratic infrastructure bill.  A link to my questions can be found here.  Next, I head to a meeting of the Select Committee on Climate Change where we hear from Los Angeles, CA, Mayor Eric Garcetti, who shares with us what his city is doing to mitigate climate change.
