ICYMI: Carter makes case for pharmaceutical independence from China

WASHINGTON, D.C. - Amidst reports of ongoing shortages of essential medications and treatments, from amoxicillin to cancer drugs, Rep. Earl L. “Buddy” Carter (R-GA) joined Fox Business’ Big Money Show last week to discuss how the United States can regain its pharmaceutical independence from China.

In case you missed it, here are the highlights:

ON THE ENERGY AND COMMERCE COMMITTEE’S REQUEST FOR INFORMATION:

“We’ve known for a long time that we were too dependent on China for our pharmaceutical needs, but we realized it during the pandemic…the Energy and Commerce Committee asked for information on drug shortages so that we can call in the experts and find out how we can resolve this.”

ON THE MADE IN AMERICA ACT:

“My legislation…will offer incentives to try and entice companies, drug manufacturers, to come back to America and to do their manufacturing in America.”

ON PHARMACEUTICAL INDEPENDENCE:

“Just as energy independence is important to national security, pharmaceutical independence is important to national security.”

“The active pharmaceutical ingredients, that’s the key. Even though a drug may be made here in America, in order to make that drug you’ve got to have the active pharmaceutical ingredients, and much of that comes from China.”
