Carter supplies $1.75 million in funding for Port Wentworth water system upgrades

WASHINGTON, D.C. – Rep. Earl L. “Buddy” Carter (R-GA) today announced $1.75 million in funding to expand Port Wentworth, Georgia’s water and sewer infrastructure as part of the House-passed Commerce, Justice, Science; Energy and Water Development; and Interior and Environment Appropriations Act, 2026.

This funding will support the city’s rapid growth, fueled by recent economic development projects, and provide enhanced services for current residents.

“Growth along our coast is booming, and Port Wentworth is a prime example. As a former mayor of a fast-growing Coastal Georgia city, I understand the pressures that new developments put on our water and sewer infrastructure and the need to plan for not just current, but also future, residents. This funding will go a long way towards providing a strong, bright future for Port Wentworth and the wonderful people who call it home,” said Rep. Carter.

“In the City of Port Wentworth, GA, the need for expanded water and sewer infrastructure is driven by its status as one of the fastest-growing cities in Georgia. With the population projected to potentially exceed 20,000 in 2027, the current utility systems must be upgraded to accommodate rapid residential development. The city is currently managing a significant surge in demand from new residents, and commercial projects and critical upgrades are needed in our socially and economically depressed areas. The funding to mitigate flooding and improve the quality of life for residents in flood-prone areas is a high priority for this funding request. The proposed funding will assist the city in improving its current infrastructure and greatly assist the city in meeting the increasing demand for services. Without this critical funding, the city could fail to meet its demand for reliable water/sewer services and flood prevention implementation,” said Steve Davis, Port Wentworth City Manager.
