Carter's leadership brings $5 million to widen I-16 in Georgia

WASHINGTON, D.C. – Rep. Earl L. “Buddy” Carter (R-GA) today announced $5 million in funding to support the widening of Interstate 16 (I-16) from four to six lanes in Chatham, Effingham, and Bryan counties as part of the Consolidated Appropriations Act, 2026.

“This is a critical investment in the future of Georgia’s Coastal Empire,” said Rep. Carter. “As freight traffic continues to grow alongside the Port of Savannah—the fastest-growing gateway in the nation—this funding will help deliver real improvements for the families, workers, and commuters who rely on this corridor every day. Expanding I-16 from four to six lanes will strengthen a nationally significant freight corridor, improve safety and mobility, and ensure our transportation infrastructure keeps pace with unprecedented port and industrial growth across Chatham, Effingham, and Bryan Counties.”

“Widening I-16 from four to six lanes is a critical investment in Georgia’s transportation network and economic future. Sections of the corridor currently serve more than 50,000 vehicles daily, with large trucks accounting for over 20% of those vehicles, said Georgia Department of Transportation Commissioner Russell McMurry. This vital freight link connects Georgia’s ports to markets across the nation. The added capacity will improve safety and reliability, cut anticipated delays by more than half, and support continued regional growth.”
