Carter Requests Expedited Additional Staff to FCI Jesup

Following a meeting with employees at the Federal Corrections Institute Jesup, Congressman Earl L. "Buddy" Carter (R-Ga.) today requested that the Federal Bureau of Prisons expedites additional staff to the facility as quickly as possible.

In a letter to Director of the Federal Bureau of Prisons Kathleen Hawk Sawyer, Carter wrote, "after meeting with the employees at the Federal Corrections Institute Jesup (FCI Jesup), in the First Congressional District of Georgia, I remain worried.

During my meeting with the employees, we discussed 2 incidents that were directly attributed to inadequate staff levels.  On Friday, July 5th, in the Special Housing Unit at FCI Jesup, an inmate cut a male staff member who was subsequently sent to a nearby hospital.  The prior weekend, multiple inmates were found using illegal substances that forced a lockdown of FCI Jesup.

We cannot continue to let incidents like this, which endanger the lives of both inmates and federal employees, continue to occur.  Please consider expediting additional staff to FCI Jesup as quickly as possible."
