Carter Statement on Democrats Blocking Funding for Small Business Lifeline Program

Congressman Earl L. "Buddy" Carter (R-Ga.) released the following statement after Senate Democrats blocked a clean, standalone funding bill to replenish funding for the Paycheck Protection Program (PPP):

"This is unbelievable. I hear from small businesses in the First District every single day that they are struggling and need help. The Paycheck Protection Program was created by Congress to deliver the assistance small businesses and hardworking Americans desperately need. The program has been so popular that we will likely need to replenish its funding and Senate Republicans moved to get that started today. However, on the day we learned that 6.6 million Americans filed for unemployment, Democrats decided to again play partisan politics by blocking this clean funding bill. It is despicable that Washington Democrats would hold up this lifeline for small businesses for absolutely no reason at all. Democrats and Republicans both know that the PPP is the program at the highest risk of becoming depleted, and we need to pass this solution now. Small businesses, the backbone of this country, cannot wait for the games to end."

The Paycheck Protection Program, created by Congress in the CARES Act, provides forgivable loans to small businesses as long as the money is used for specific purposes such as payroll and employment support. 501 (c)(3) organizations are also eligible for this program.
